The City of Tybee Island Continues Raising Homes to Prevent Flooding

A progress report will be provided at the next Tybee Island City Council Meeting on October 22nd at 6:30 p.m.

In an effort to keep Tybee Island safe and resilient against storms, the City of Tybee Island is helping residents raise their homes to prevent flooding. They've received plans for 4 homes, one of which has already been lifted and is almost finished!

The city received a grant in the summer of 2019. This came after Hurricane Irma caused severe flooding in September of 2017. Tybee submitted 2 separate applications to the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program at the request of FEMA. The first application was for homes that FEMA deemed repetitive loss/substantial damage. There were 12 homes on this grant application, and unfortunately, they cannot add more homes to this first grant application.

However, the city submitted a 2nd application that included about 50 more homes that met the grant criteria. The city has not yet received that grant. City officials say they're hopeful, but they don't know for sure if or when they could get the 2nd grant.

The city hired a grant management consultant to help with the project, and they will be giving an update on the grants and home raising progress at this week's City Council meeting. It's Thursday, October 22nd at 6:30 p.m.
